On an online marketplace, your photographs are your shopfront. A customer cannot pick up your product, feel the weight, or smell the spices. Your images have to do all of that work. The good news is that with a modern smartphone and the right technique, you can produce professional-quality product photographs without expensive equipment.
Seychelles has one of the most reliable natural lighting environments in the world. Take advantage of it. Photograph your products near a window or outdoors in the shade, avoiding harsh midday direct sunlight which creates unflattering shadows. Overcast days produce the most even, soft light, which is ideal for product photography.
A white or very light grey background keeps the focus entirely on your product. A sheet of white card from a stationery shop costs very little and makes an enormous difference. Avoid cluttered or patterned backgrounds that distract from what you are selling.
For every product, provide at least four images: front, back, side, and a close-up of an important detail such as a label, texture, or feature. If the product has a defect, photograph it honestly. Buyers appreciate transparency and it significantly reduces disputes and returns.
Include an image that shows the product relative to a familiar object or being held in a hand. Customers often misjudge the size of items from photographs alone. A simple scale reference eliminates a major source of buyer disappointment.
Adjust brightness and contrast to make your product look its best, but do not edit to the point where the colours are inaccurate. If a fabric is dark blue in real life, it should look dark blue in your listing. Colour misrepresentation is one of the most common causes of returns.
If you sell Seychellois crafts, spices, or lifestyle products, consider a secondary lifestyle image showing the product in use or in a naturally Seychellois setting. A handmade basket photographed on a beach, or a jar of vanilla photographed with tropical foliage in the background, tells a story that a plain product shot cannot.
